Who we are
The Cognitive Assessment Program was established in 2003 in order to provide cognitive and educational assessment services to the Northern Virginia Community. Our mission is to provide high quality, timely, and comparable assessments for all clients, while ensuring that the testing experiences is comfortable and appropriate. We provide individual cognitive and educational assessments year round, and group administered assessments in the fall and/or winter months. In addition to providing assessment services, GMU’s Cognitive Assessment Program also supports research designed to improve our understanding of best assessment practices.
In recognition of the high standards and consistent quality of reports generated by the GMU Cognitive Assessment Program, Fairfax County Public Schools recommends our program as a quality provider of assessments to families who are seeking entrance to FCPS’ Advanced Academic Programs. In addition, our reports are often sought out by parents seeking admission to private school programs, or who simply wish to have a more detailed understanding of their child’s individual pattern of cognitive strengths and needs.
Our program, which is administratively housed within GMU’s Department of Psychology, shares a suite of offices with GMU’s Center for Psychological Services. We are located approximately 1.5 miles south of GMU’s Fairfax Campus, at 10340 Democracy Lane, Suite 202, Fairfax, VA 22030. All individual testing appointments occur at our Democracy Lane office, while our twice yearly group testing events are typically held on the Fairfax Campus.
To make an appointment or speak with an intake staff member, please contact our main office number: (703) 993-4200. Individual testing appointments are generally available six days per week (Monday through Saturday), year round, with the exception of certain holidays. Our staff members are available to answer calls M – F, from 10 – 3, during most of the year.
Please note, however, that our call volume increases dramatically during the months coinciding with Fairfax County Public School’s application and appeals deadlines for their Advanced Academic Programs. As a result, your call may be sent directly to voice mail. Please leave a message, and an intake staff member will return your call within 48 hours (or 72 hours, if you leave a message on a Friday or Saturday). We ask for your patience during our high volume periods. Once you are contacted and have an appointment scheduled, we expect that your experience with your individual examiner will be a positive one.
